Answers to FAQs
How often do I need a checkup and cleaning?
Dr. Hollingshead stands by the American Dental Association’s recommendation that everyone in good health visit the dentist twice a year for cleanings and checkups. In some cases, such as when a patient has gum disease, visits should be scheduled more frequently. While regular checkups and cleanings are important, following through with restorative dental care should always be high priority. If we find small cavities, suspicious lesions, or a high level of bacteria in our mouth, the condition will not resolve itself naturally. On the contrary, cavities will grow and can destroy a tooth. Oral cancer can actually take your life, if not treated. And when bacteria levels are high, oral health will deteriorate. Dr. Hollingshead will recommend practical ways to solve these and other oral health concerns, so you can enjoy a strong, healthy smile for years to come.
Will Dr. Hollingshead see my children?
Children have special needs. Dr. Hollingshead refers children to a pediatric dentist for optimal clinical care and a rewarding experience. Your pediatric dentist will address developmental issues, as well as dental disease, in an office designed for the comfort of children and their parents.
What is cosmetic dentistry?
The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a specialty, so any dentist can claim to be a cosmetic dentist. You should review a dentist’s actual cases, like those in Dr. Hollingshead’s Happy Patients Gallery, to gauge the professional’s expertise. Cosmetic dentistry refers to dental procedures that improve the appearance of a person’s smile. We offer teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and cosmetic bonding to improve the shape and color of teeth. Dr. Hollingshead considers all dentistry cosmetic to some degree. Our tooth-colored fillings, white crowns, and lifelike dentures will give you a healthy smile that functions comfortably and looks sensational.
How long can I wait to get my dental work done?
The longer you wait, the bigger your problem will be. There’s no way around it. Small cavities that are not addressed will grow into larger cavities. In the early stages, a filling may correct the problem. However, a large cavity may require a crown, or even root canal or replacement tooth, to restore oral health and structural integrity. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States, but many people think gingivitis is not a serious concern. As for replacing teeth, the sooner the better. Missing teeth allow jawbone tissue to degenerate, which can alter appearance and oral function. We do our best to make dental care affordable and comfortable. If you have concerns about these or other issues, please call our Las Vegas dental office, and we’ll do our best to help you get the dental work you need.
What can Dr. Hollingshead do to ease my mind about dental procedures?
If you feel uncomfortable or anxious at the dentist, you’ve come to the right place! Dr. Hollingshead and our team count our patients as friends first. We’ll listen to your concerns, so please voice them. Many measures can be taken to give you a positive, rewarding dental care experience. We offer nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, to ease patients’ minds and create a physically comfortable dental appointment. In addition, you may want to get a good night’s sleep, avoid caffeine, and bring your iPod, MP3 player, or music headphones to your visit. Call us to express your concerns, and we will work with you to ensure that you feel confident and comfortable when you visit our office.
